- In ENGINEERING view is the combination of moving components to transform the input forces and movement into a desired set of output and movement. 
- In CHEMISTRY view is the step by step of sequence of elementary reactions by which overall chemical change occurs.
 

6 essential mechanisms in functional prototypes 

1. Actuators

  • A device that makes something move or operates it

 

2. Cams
  • A mechanical device is used to convert the rotation of a shaft into simple or complex reciprocating linear motion.


3. Gears
  • A device used to

 Increase torque from the driving equipment (motor) to driven equipment 

 Reduce the speed generated by the motor

 Change the direction of the rotating shafts


4. Lever
  • An effort applied to one end of the beam will cause a load to be moved at the other.

  • Allowing a small input force to exert a much higher output force.

 

5. Ratchets
  • A mechanism that drives to limit either rotary or linear motion to only one direction.

 

 

6. Springs
  • A mechanism that has the capacity to absorb, store and release energy through a change in shape.

  • The amount of energy generated by the change in shape is governed by Hooke’s Law (within the elastic limitations of materials)
